Where practical remove weed burden before sowing. Sow in early spring when soil temperatures are 18° celsius and rising. Sow no deeper than 2cm.

As sub tropical pasture species are slower to establish it is recommended not to graze for up to 8 to 10 months after sowing

Once plants are well established refer to the grazing management information referenced later in this information sheet.
Do not overgraze over summer

Self Regeneration Pasture Mix
With Safeguard early flowering ARGT resistant ryegrass

Irwin Hunter & Co have introduced this pasture mix to cater for the large number of farmers whom require an early flowering pasture of ryegrass and clovers that will set seed for regeneration in the following years and give farmers protection against annual ryegrass toxicity at the same time.

Cultivate area to be sown to stimulate Wimmera germination then spray with non selective herbicide thereby reducing Wimmera seed reserves before sowing Safeguard. Leave a test strip.

Through late winter early spring graze to ensure Wimmera pasture is in vegegative phase so that head emergence is in sync with Safeguard. Mechanical manipulation can be used.

RemSafeguard Annual Ryegrass
Safeguard your protection against ARGT (Annual Ryegrass Toxicity)
 350mm+ | 4.8 to 8.0 pH | Most Soil Types

Safeguard pasture rotation ARGT nematode resistant annual ryegrass shows considerable promise in overcoming ARGT problems throughout the cropping and livestock areas where Wimmera ryegrass is a problem . Safeguard is also resistant to Cereal cyst nematode and shows tolerance to Wheat and Oat strains of take all.

In addition Safeguard will reduce the level of ARGT, (Anguina funesta), nematodes in oaten export hay.

Safeguard developed through a joint program by Meat Research Corporation and the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), represents a considerable break through in assisting farmers to overcome ARGT by crossing with the background Wimmera thus incorporating nematode resistance into the following years population.

ove livestock to ensure good seed set before grazing as dry standing feed after full maturity.

Finecut Rhodes Grass
(Chloris gayana)

Finecut rhodes has been bred from Katambora types for improved establishment, dry matter production, (23% increase over Katambora in trilas), and silage or hay production.

It is recommended to graze after 8 to 10 months or when plants are mature, i.e. going reproductive. If desired broadcast / sow any additional legumes in the first autumn after grazing then re introduce livestock to get seed to soil contact.

Implement a rotational grazing system. Graze at 25 to 30cm and leave a residue of 12 to 15cm. Do not overgraze over summer.

Gatton Panic

(Megathyrsus maximum)

Gatton Panic is a deep rooted bunch grass that is a useful addition to Rhodes grasses in mixtures. Gatton has some tolerance to dryer conditions once established.

Gatton Panic grass key attributes

Gatton panic is similar to Green panic and has broader darker green leaves than Bambatsi panic. Gatton is more robust than either Bambatsi or Petrie grass

Being a deep rooted plant Gatton can withstand reasonable grazing pressure however should be rotationally grazed to achieve the best production

Summer active where soil mositure available and is generally quick to respond after the first autumn rains

Gatton Panic is efficient in that more of the surplus carbohydrates accumulate in the upper part of the plant where it can be eaten. The root system is concentrated in the upper layers of the soil which assists with rapid response to light showers

Gatton Panic’s soil requirements are versatile and it will grow on heavy grey or brown soils or scrub loams and sands. Gatton can be grown on lighter soil types but requires good soil nutrition to persist.
